Lodging in the Icefields Parkway

• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Icefields Parkway Region, Alberta.
The Icefields Parkway Region, which stretches between Lake Louise and Jasper, is known for its breathtaking mountain scenery of shimmering glaciers, deep blue lakes and snow peaked mountains. As visitors tour the Icefields Parkway Region they can put their feet up in top-notch hotels, bed and breakfasts, hostels and other accommodations speckled throughout the region's spectacular scenery.

HOTELS & MOTELS

The region's accommodation directory includes hotels and motels that range from sleek to homey. Visitors hoping to add some much needed luxury to their vacation will enjoy the Fairmont Lake Louise—which overlooks the majestic and world-famous Lake Louise—and the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge's stately log cabins. Although visitors have several hotel and motel options in the tourist meccas of Lake Louise and Jasper, the rest of the Icefields Parkway also boasts a fair share of options. Sunwapta Falls Resort, about 45 minutes south of Jasper townsite, is open from May to October and features comfortable cabin-style accommodation. In addition to camp sites and cabins, the David Thompson Resort has over 45 motel-style rooms and the Nordegg Resort Lodge offers visitors mountain view rooms with kitchen units. The town of Rocky Mountain House has a multitude of hotel and motel options such as well-known chains like Best Western, Holiday Inn Express and Super 8.

BED & BREAKFASTS

At bed and breakfasts, visitors can experience the comforts of home while exploring the Icefields Parkway Region's multitude of attractions. Bed and breakfasts typically offer a handful of guestrooms that are individually decorated and feature private or shared washrooms. One of the perks to staying at a bed and breakfast is of course the inclusion of breakfast, which can range from hot meals with bacon and eggs to continental breakfast spreads with muffins, cereals and juices. In addition to the assortment of properties in Jasper and Lake Louise, the community of Rocky Mountain House also has several bed and breakfast options. The Prairie Creek Inn, a short drive from Rocky Mountain House, has nine modern guest suites and a two-bedroom executive cottage. Fireplaces, soaker tubs, feather duvets, outdoor patios or decks and other amenities are included in the Prairie Creek Inn's guestrooms. Another Rocky Mountain House treasure is the Grapevine Bed and Breakfast, which functions as a tea room, an antique shop and a B&B. The Grapevine's two suites exude a French Country vibe and feature full kitchens and private patios.

CAMPGROUNDS

Visitors who opt to camp have front row seats each morning to spectacular sun rises over the area's lakes and mountains, and due to the area's beautiful scenery, campgrounds are an extremely popular accommodation option. Luckily for travellers, there are several campgrounds in the region with well-maintained lots for tents, trailers and RVs, with amenities ranging from humble outhouses to flush toilets and hot showers. The hamlet of Nordegg comes alive during the summer as visitors flock to the area to find the perfect campsite. The David Thompson Resort is located in the Nordegg area and has sites with trees, fire pits and picnic tables, along with showers, laundry services and firewood. The Rocky Mountain House area has a medley of campgrounds such as Crimson Lake, Wilderness Village Campground and Riverview Campground. Centennial Park and New Old Town Campground, located right inside the town of Rocky Mountain House, offer the fun of camping with urban conveniences.

HOSTELS

Travellers on a tight budget can consider hostels, which offer private and dormitory-style rooms, shared common areas and, most of all, budget-friendly rates. Lake Louise features a bundle of hostel options such as the Hostelling International (HI)-Lake Louise Alpine Centre, which has rooms that can accommodate two to five people and a common area with vaulted ceilings, comfy couches and a towering fireplace. As visitors travel from Lake Louise to Jasper on the Icefields Parkway Highway they can choose from several hostels along the way. The HI-Mosquito Creek, only 29 km (18 mi) north of Lake Louise, offers cozy cabins, a fireplace and a sauna, while the HI-Rampart Creek Wilderness Hostel, 34 km (21 mi) south of the Columbia Icefield Centre, is a popular spot for ice climbers with over 150 ice climbs within 30 minutes of the hostel. Once in Jasper, visitors can choose from several hostel choices, such as the HI Jasper, which has private rooms and a mixed dorm room that has 42 beds.

CABINS, CHALETS & COTTAGES

Typically located away from the hustle and bustle of large urban centres, cabins, chalets and cottages are a great way to experience the serenity of the Icefields Parkway Region and travellers can choose from a bounty of such properties nestled in the region's beautiful scenery. About 20 km (12 mi) southeast of Rocky Mountain House, Honeysuckle Lake Cottages offer a peaceful escape from hectic city life with comfy two-bedroom log cottages overlooking Honeysuckle Lake. Cheechako Cabins, in Nordegg, has units with fully-equipped kitchens and covered decks with propane BBQs and patio seating. Lucky's Cafe and Cabins in Caroline offer cozy cabins with kitchenettes, as well as a cottage with a full kitchen, washer, dryer and satellite TV.
